Kidney Friendly Sandwiches: Quick, Delicious, and Worry-Free Lunch Ideas

Sandwiches are without doubt a staple of a British diet. Whether it’s a traditional cheese and pickle or the favourite weekend bacon butty, you can pretty much guarantee that most enjoy a sandwich on a weekly basis. The great thing about them is that they are super versatile and there is something to meet everyone’s tastes and dietary requirements. If you have kidney disease, then that is no exception. If you’re on a low protein diet, a high protein diet, or have been advised to restrict your potassium or phosphate then sandwiches can still be a great kidney-friendly lunch option. Sandwiches can be enjoyed by people with kidney disease.

How to make a kidney-friendly sandwich

Creating a kidney-friendly sandwich is all about balance, flavour, and smart ingredient choices. When making your sandwich, think about the following elements to give you a sandwich that’s not only quick and delicious but also nourishing and kind to your kidneys.

  • Bread: Start with your base—opt for wholegrain, sourdough, or your own low-salt homemade bread, as these options provide fibre, are good for blood sugar control while being great for kidney and gut health. Check out our blog post on what kind of bread is good for kidney disease for more information about bread.
  • Protein: Next, add a source of protein to keep you feeling full and fueled; think grilled or roast chicken, tuna with Greek yoghurt, eggs, or plant-based options like hummus or chickpeas. Having CKD does not mean you have to avoid protein but just be mindful of portion sizes, especially for animal protein like chicken, beef or tuna.
  • Salad/vegetables/fruit: To boost your 5-a-day, layer on plenty of vegetables, such as crisp cucumber, sweet bell peppers, lettuce, or crunchy carrots. . You can even add a hint of sweetness with sliced strawberries or apple for a more fruity sandwich filling!
  • Healthy fat: Finally, try to include a healthy fat for added flavour and nutrition—avocado mash, a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkling of seeds or a smear of tahini work beautifully. Some of these are higher in potassium (avocado) and phosphate (tahini) so think about portions if you are limiting these in your diet.

Although we recommend making your own sandwiches, it is not always practical and at times, you may have to rely on shop bought sandwiches.  If you do, aim to stay at or below 1.5g salt per whole sandwich with any other items eaten alongside your sandwich containing minimal salt eg fruit, raw vegetable sticks, unsalted popcorn.

A kidney-friendly sandwich option.

What about shop bought sauces and condiments?

Most shop bought condiments will contain salt and perhaps sugar so reading the labels is always recommended. However these few tips will help you to ensure your sandwich remains as kidney-friendly as possible:

  • Choose low salt versions of the condiments where available
  • Be mindful of how much you use
  • Try pairing Greek yoghurt to sauces to dilute the salt content and for a milder flavour  eg Greek yoghurt and mustard
  • Make your own sauces where you can eg tahini sauce made with tahini, plain yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice or creamy tzatziki with Greek yoghurt, garlic and cucumber or even homemade pesto with basil, pine nuts, garlic, olive oil and parmesan.

Kidney-friendly tips: Avoid using packet grated mozzarella as it is higher in salt by almost double compared to whole mozzarella – who knew?! But keep an eye on the portion sizes by using thin slices. Thin slices of tomatoes for those on a lower potassium diet are fine as it’s all about balance!

6. The Mediterranean Tuna Crunch

Upgrade your tuna sandwich with this, kidney-friendly twist! Combine flaky tuna with natural yoghurt for a lighter touch. Tuck it into a soft wholemeal pitta or wrap for a satisfying, kidney-friendly meal that’s bursting with flavour, colour, and texture.

Kidney-friendly tip: Falafels can be a bit on the salty side, so limit to 3-4 falafels for a lower salt meal. Check the nutrition labels to find the lowest salt options. 12. The Sweet & Nutty Crunch

Enjoy the perfect combination of creamy and crunchy in this simple yet delicious sandwich filling! Rich, tasty peanut butter (or almond butter) meets the crisp sweetness of sliced apples. The contrast of flavours and textures makes this sandwich an irresistible treat. Kidney-friendly tips: Peanut butters come in all variations these days – look out for ones with no added sugar and no added salt (often use the word ‘natural’). Peanut butter is high in potassium and phosphate – so limit to 1 tablespoon per sandwich if you are on a low potassium and/or phosphate diet. A way to make a little go further is to gently “melt” the peanut butter in the microwave and spread onto your sandwich before adding your apple slices.
